”The Matrix” Meets Horse Supplements

Is there a matrix somewhere that recommends types of daily supplements that should be used based on type of grain fed, type of use, hours of forage/day, etc? I am currently feeding a supplement that is based on a trainer recommendation, but would rather custom design the supplements that I use…

Dear JF,

This is your lucky day! SmartPak just launched a new online tool called the Supplement Advisor designed to do just what you’re asking. There are three parts to this helpful (yet fun!) web-based “matrix”—profile, questionnaire and results.

In the first section, Profile, you identify your horse (name, age, gender, breed) then provide a few more details that help us understand him better. For example, your riding style, his living situation, how much time he spends grazing, his workload, how much he travels and if he’s a picky eater.

Section two is the Questionnaire, where we ask about any specific issues or concerns you may have that can be addressed with supplements. For example, is his coat dull and dry? Maybe he needs more fatty acids in his diet. Does he have brittle hooves that crack easily and won’t hold a shoe? Perhaps a hoof supplement with biotin is in order.

The final section is the Results section. On this page, the Advisor presents three levels of support for your horse based on your responses in the profile and questionnaire sections. You pick the level that best matches your horse’s needs and your pocketbook. My favorite part is actually below the specific supplement suggestions, where the reasoning behind each selection is explained. For some areas, there’s even a link called Management Suggestions, where additional advice is given to help your horse be his healthiest.

I hope you enjoy entering data about your horse into our new system and that it helps you customize the perfect supplement program for him!

Take the Supplement Advisor today to get your customized supplement recommendation.

  1. I have a 13 year old Thoroughbred mare who is having 3 heat cycles in one month I think she is having a hormone over load what can work for her at a reasonable rate to get back to the way she was when I got her when she was 12 years old ,this started when she turned 13 years old in April.
Can you point me in the right direction,I am not a breeder I am a rescuer.and do you have samples I can trey on her she has kicked me in the face by a cow kick that is how bad it is.

  2. she does have brittle hooves and she get lots of grain twice a day and has a pasture to graze on and she is not alone she has tomore horses with her and she needs to build up her muscle tone but right now she is to dangerious to ride. She gets jumpy at every noise I just had the farrier out and he said every ones horses have dry cracked hooves and I have been puttomg on hoof oil and that doesn’t work so I got hoof supplement for all 3 of them. she is ridden when she is calm and not a full nervious nut case.

Apparently I've been obsessed with horses since I was born, and I used to beg for pony rides on a regular basis. I started showing in 4-H, progressed to equitation and jumpers in high school and rode on the IHSA team in college where I also discovered the joys...
