Senior Horse Supplements

With a sound nutritional program, many horses can enjoy normal activities and even competition well into their senior years. Older horses need nutritional support in three areas, and SmartPak has the right supplements to meet all of their needs.

If your senior horse is losing weight, improve his body condition with supplements that contain Probiotics and Prebiotics for better digestive function, as well as healthy fats and critical amino acids for muscle tone and weight gain. Focus SR (#10032, $18.40) provides a daily serving of SOURCE micronutrients. SmartGain 4 (#14505, $25.60) offers four-way support, including Fenugreek for appetite stimulation. For senior horses in good weight, consider digestive support from the products in our post on digestive support.

#2: Antioxidants & Immune Support

Your senior horse may be more prone to illness or slower to heal from injury. As horses age, many need supplemental antioxidants like Vitamin C, along with other ingredients that support tissue health and the immune system. SmartProtect Ultra (#16316, $33.75) provides immune support with antioxidants, bioflavonoids, and herbs.

#3: Joint Support

Many older horses lose mobility due to stiffness and soreness. A joint supplement can support the health of your senior’s joint tissues and fight the inflammation that causes day-to-day discomfort. Senior Flex (#11817, $28.60) provides a combination of Glucosamine, Chondroitin Sulfate, MSM, Yucca, and Ester C. Recovery EQ (#11689, $44.80) provides a powerful dose of Glucosamine and MSM, plus potent antioxidants.

3-in-1 Support

SmartFlex Senior (#17472, $31.60) supports older horses in the all three areas! Glucosamine, Chondroitin Sulfate, HA and MSM aid in joint function, while Devil’s Claw, Bromelain and Phenylalanine manage discomfort. Prebiotics, Probiotics and digestive enzymes support digestion and weight maintenance. Vitamin C and Super Oxide Dismutase provide immune support and protection from free radicals.

Have you thought about a supplement for seniors that are easy keepers? I have my horse on SmartPak senior, but after reading there are ingredients to support weight maintenance, I’m thinking that I should take him off that, because I keep trying to get weight off him…

  2. Susan McCarthy says:

I’ve just switched my 18-yr old quarter horse mare with Cushings to a Senior food. I’m nervous about the dietary change. Is there a Senior feed that you would recommend?
