Barn of the Month – Fairview Farms, JJC

Fairview Farms JJC, Brimfield, MA
Submitted by Susan Freeland, Boarder

Fairview Farms, JJC is located in Brimfield, MA. Centrally located on the boarder of Hamden Country and northern Connecticut, Fairview was purchased in 2007 by a father and daughter team; Krystine O’Connor and her father James Corkery. The property consists of 25 acres of pasture and woodland trails, it is a short walk to miles of trails of Brimfield State Forest and the Grand Trunk Railway.

Fairview is more than just a boarding and lesson farm, it is a farm geared towards sharing and teaching the love of horses that has been part of the owners’ lives for generations. Fairview is a licensed therapeutic stable, providing those with disabilities the opportunity to not only ride, but learn about horses and themselves in a safe environment. Fairview offers after-school enrichment programs year round and works closely with Massachusetts Girl Scout Council providing education, exposure to horsemanship and works closely with leaders to help scouts obtain their badges. Janet King, a licensed instructor and judge, is our head instructor. Every day she shares her expertise, horsemanship and genuine caring nature with all who enter the barn.

Being a new horse owner/boarder at Fairview has been a wonderful experience. Having been around horses all my life in various aspects, I was reacquainted with the horse world through my oldest daughter who too became interested when she was young and went on to ride at the collegiate level and now plays polo with local new England club teams. My experience as a horse owner has had its ups and downs. I have been so fortunate to be surrounded by knowledgeable horsemen and women from Fairview Farm who have guided me through.

After purchasing two young thoroughbreds I quickly learned the importance of diet and supplements. Krys told me about the SmartPak Barn Buddy Program and suggested that I contact them regarding the needs of my two young geldings. I spoke at length with educated and informed staff at SmartPak and started my horse on supplements. After pulling shoes on one of my horses, I was concerned about him possibly becoming “ouchy” during the time transitioning to being barefoot. SmartHoof had, I believe, a huge impact on his transition. He not only transitioned beautifully with no lameness, but his hooves didn’t crack or chip during this time. My boys were started on SmartTendon to ensure that they remained healthy and strong in their new lives off the race track.

I am now handling feeding of all the barns residents and I love the ease of the SmartPak system, the premeasured supplements make my life so much easier compared to having to scoop, measure and keep all 19 horses diets in order.

I just want to thank SmartPak for their continued work in providing those of us who want nothing but the best for the loved members of our families; that just happen to be horses, with the tools needed to not only make our lives easier, but to keep all of our horses at Fairview happy and healthy.
