Horse: Rocki, 13 year old Paint gelding
I started taking riding lessons at the age of 5 after my parents let me have my first pony ride at our local fair. I was hooked, and pretty soon I was practically living at the barn. At 8 years old, I started showing in local open and 4-H shows, but had my eye on the larger breed shows. I went to my first AQHA show at age 14, but because my horse was “halter bred”, I quickly hit a roadblock when it came to being competitive in the All-Around classes.
In 1999, my parents surprised me with my current APHA gelding, Rocki. He was a Christmas present, and one that I will forever be grateful for. Rocki and I have been through a lot together these past 12 years. We’ve hauled from Connecticut to Texas competing in APHA and PtHA approved shows, and in 2005 we were 2-time World Champions in Open and Amateur Western Pleasure.
We are still actively competing, and in the past few years have honed our skills in the All-Around events. Rocki has become an excellent pattern horse in addition to his western pleasure abilities (you’ll even see me in breeches and tall boots occasionally, however I still prefer the western bling). Even though he is getting older and has been in the show ring almost all his life, he still loves it and so do I. This year, I plan to show with Rocki again, and may also try some team penning for a little variety. We’ll see!
Rocki had a hock injury 3 summers ago that left him stiff every now and then. Given his age and the prior injury, I wanted to provide him with both joint and soft tissue support. SmartFlex Repair Pellets
Rocki used to throw shoes left and right. I knew that he needed some additional support to strengthen his hoof wall, so I added SmartHoof Pellets. It took about 8 months for his new hoof to completely grow out, but now that it has, I don’t have to call the farrier every other week to come put his shoes back on!
About 2 years ago, during the height of show season, I noticed that Rocki was dropping weight. He was working hard and hauling to shows regularly. I knew that he needed some extra fat added to his diet so I tried Cool Calories 100. It did the trick and now I keep him on the maintenance level year round.
I added SmartOmega 3 to his SmartPaks because it was a great complement to Rocki’s overall nutritional program. It provides him with a great source of Omega 3s as well as antioxidants and digestive support – and every competitive horse could use that combination!
I use SmartPaks because my barn offers a rough board that requires each boarder to cover one feeding shift per week. This means that in any given week, Rocki could be fed by up to 14 different people! Even though I know that everyone is diligent, it would be easy for someone to miss one of Rocki’s supplements or give him the wrong dose. With SmartPaks, I know Rocki gets exactly what he’s supposed to, no matter who feeds. Another great feature is that I don’t have to worry about people leaving the buckets of expensive supplements open and exposed to the air, which can compromise their potency. I like that SmartPaks are sealed for freshness.
