Dog: Apollo (aka “Lito”), 6 yr old Miniature Pinscher
Discipline: Hunter/Jumper

I adopted Apollo about a year ago from a rescue organization for Miniature Pinschers. When I went to pick him up, I instantly fell in love. He rode home from Maine on my lap the whole car ride like he had known me his entire life. I knew he was a little chunky, but when I got him home to meet his new sister Penny (my first Miniature Pinscher who I have had since she was a puppy), I realized that standing next to her, Apollo was definitely in need of a diet. Penny was a little apprehensive to have a new brother after being an only child for the first 5 years of her life, but now they are the best of friends. People ask all the time if they are from the same litter (they are both 6 years old now) and they look enough alike now that they honestly could be!

Apollo’s PortionPaks

Apollo’s diet starts with Wellness Super5Mix® Complete Health Lamb, Barley and Salmon Meal Recipe in PortionPaks. I absolutely LOVE PortionPaks because they are premeasured and each meal I open a sealed bag, so I know the food is always fresh. Apollo and Penny eat the same kibble but their PortionPaks do not contain the same amount of kibble. It is much simpler to feed from PortionPaks that are labeled with each dog’s name, the name of the food and the amount of food in each Pak. The bonus is that when I go somewhere with them or they stay with their grandparents, the feeding instructions couldn’t be easier…open and pour!

Apollo’s Meals Continued…

I am a firm believer that dogs should not be on a kibble-only diet. Kibble is high in carbohydrates (yes, even the highest quality kibble) and dogs don’t generally need excess carbs unless they are working dogs or getting a ton of exercise. In addition to his PortionPaks, Apollo also gets the LiveSmart Harvest Mix and LiveSmart Hearty Salmon Stew. I added the LiveSmart Harvest Mix to Apollo’s meals to add some fruits and vegetables to his diet. He absolutely loves the taste and I love that he is getting all the benefits that come with fruits and veggies without the hassle of having to cut them up. The LiveSmart Hearty Salmon Stew is Apollo’s absolute favorite. He goes nuts for it, jumping up and down on his hind legs when he sees the shiny foil pouch come out at dinner time. I feed the stew because it a healthy human-grade protein source, the most important part of the meal for a dog. The salmon variety gives him additional omega 3s which have countless health benefits including giving him a shiny, healthy coat. Apollo also receives the Fruitables Pumpkin Digestive Supplement with his meals. I like it because it is a high-fiber, low calorie addition to his meal, allowing me to give him less kibble which really helped to get the excess weight off of him. The pumpkin also helps with digestion and contains B-vitamins, beta carotenes, antioxidants, and vitamins A, C and E. You may read this and think I’m a little excessive but my dogs are very healthy and rarely need to go to the vet (other than for their annual exams), which I believe has to do greatly with their diet.

Apollo’s Canine SmartPaks

Apollo’s Canine SmartPaks include: SmartCanine™ Joint & SmartCanine™ Digestion.

Even though Apollo doesn’t have any noticeable joint discomfort, I feed SmartCanine Joint in order to lessen his chances of developing joint problems down the road. Because he was overweight, he was also dealing with a bit more stress on his joints than he should have been.

Apollo also came to me with a sensitive stomach and a chicken intolerance. I started him on SmartCanine™ Digestion because I knew I would be changing his diet and wanted to prevent as much stomach upset as possible. The probiotics and digestive enzymes made the food transition a breeze and I have decided to keep both Apollo and Penny on these supplements to make sure they are getting and utilizing all the nutrients from their food.

Why Bekky Uses Canine SmartPaks

I started using Canine SmartPaks because of the convenience. With PortionPaks, pouches of stew and Canine SmartPaks, feeding couldn’t be easier. Apollo’s feeding regiment seems a bit complicated but with Canine SmartPaks, each supplement is appropriately dosed, sealed for freshness and ready when I need them because they are on an auto-ship program. My friends and family are always amazed at my dogs’ healthy meals. Now if only I could train myself to eat so well!

We also rescued a dog mostly chocolate lab and maybe one fourth shephard. He was very over weight when we got him and apollo”s mother(my daughter) convinced us that the dog (Bear) needed to go on a diet. She set up a plan and he lost at least 10 pounds which was badly needed and his coat is flawless. We’re very spoiled now with the individual bags of kibbles and stew etc. which makes it so easy to feed him and leave him for an overnight, if we go somewhere that we can’t bring him.We love the concept and once you try it for your dog you won’t go back to the pet store or supermarket.

I just ordered and received my first order for 3 of my dogs smartpaks.. I am not sure just how the next months order is handled and I am hoping you would be kind enough to explain it to me. Do I need to go to the websit and reorder my dog foods every month or, do they just automatically ship the same order to me and just bill the account number I used on my first order? Any knowledge you could share with me would be much appriciated by me and my 3 pups…..Thank You, Wanda Schooler

I want to use the canine smartpaks for my dogs as I use them for my horses already but they don’t carry the brand of food my boys are on and it took me long enough to convince my boyfriend to switch them to this one that I dare not try it again and we are very pleased with this food. I have however started to order my older dogs joint meds through here, its cheaper and I love the free shipping because it comes with my smartpaks so we never run out either!

Please reply! I really need to know! About how long did it take for Apollo to lose the weight? Also, did you put him in any exercise plan? My min pin looks exactly as he did before and I need to get her looking like he does now!

Hi Amy – Bekky here, Apollo’s owner. When I adopted Apollo you can see he was considerably overweight. I did increase his exercise slightly, but he also started to run around more on his own once he got some of the weight off. The before and after pictures were taken about 4 months apart and I would say overall, the whole weight loss transformation took about five months. I keep Apollo on a consistent, healthy diet and make sure that I am accurately measuring his portions at each meal. I try to make sure he gets daily exercise, even if it is just running around the house chasing a ball. I only offer Apollo healthy treats (his favorites are WellBites) to keep his calorie intake down. I love using things like little pieces or carrots or lettuce as treats because he thinks he is getting something special and delicious and I know he is getting something healthy. I hope this information is helpful. Best of luck with your Min Pin’s weight loss!

        Hi Becky,

Thank you so much for replying! You said that you make sure to measure his food portions correctly, but I though that Live Smart food were already individually proportioned? I’m a bit confused on that. I must say, hearing that it only took about 5 months is a relief! Our vet told us she should only lose about 1lb every 6 months so I figured it would take over a year for her to get at a healthy weight. I’m glad to hear that wont be the case!

        • SmartPak SmartPak says:

          Hi Amy,

You are correct, I do not have to measure Apollo’s food anymore because he is getting pre-measured PortionPaks. They take all the guess work out. Keep in mind that every dog is an individual, so while it only took Apollo about 6 months to lose most of his weight, it can differ from dog to dog. Sticking with the diet, providing daily exercise and making sure to stay away from feeding Apollo people food and/or a ton of treats, was the key to success for us. As far as switching from kibble to wet food, I think you may have misunderstood (or maybe I was a little confusing, I apologize). Apollo gets high-quality kibble with both breakfast and dinner, but I have cut back on the amount of kibble I feed him because kibble is full of carbohydrates that don’t help get weight off. In addition to a reduced portion of kibble (he gets 1/4 cup each meal and weighs 10 lbs. now), he also gets a small pouch of our Hearty Salmon Stew (1/2 at breakfast and 1/2 at dinner), a tablespoon of pumpkin at each meal, and a half of a scoop of the LiveSmart Harvest Mix (fruits and veggies). I hope this helps you get started. Please call our Customer Care team at 1-888-752-5171 if you would like us to help customize a meal plan for your Min Pin. Have a great weekend!

I forgot to ask- You mentioned in your post that you switch from kibble dry food to wet food. How often would you say you change it up, every other day, every few days?
