Horse: Graysea, 4 year old Thoroughbred mare
Discipline: Dressage and Natural Horsemanship
I’ve been riding since a very young age (here’s a picture of my first pony), and my background includes everything from competing in the Hunter/Jumper show ring to ranch riding in Wyoming. Over the past ten years I’ve been combining a natural horsemanship approach with traditional dressage training. I’ve only had my young horse Graysea for about eight months, but I’m starting to think that I may need to dabble in Eventing as well, because I think she would love it!
As the resident “supplement geek” here at SmartPak, and one of the developers of the SmartSupplements™ line, people often ask me what’s in my horse’s SmartPak… So here it is!
SmartVite EZ Keeper Grass Pellets:
Making sure my horse’s diet has a complete and balanced selection of vitamins and minerals is at the top of my list. Graysea gets a partial serving of a low starch fortified grain, but since she doesn’t get a full serving of this feed, I use SmartVite EZ Keeper Grass Pellets to complete her ration. Even though she’s not an “easy keeper”, this is the appropriate SmartVite formula for a horse getting a partial serving of fortified grain. (Use this chart to see which SmartVite your horse may need.)
SmartOmega 3™ Ultra:
Making sure Graysea gets a daily source of Omega 3 fatty acids is my next priority. Since the modern horse’s diet is generally skewed toward providing too many Omega 6 fatty acids (which are pro-inflammatory) and too few Omega 3 fatty acids (which are anti-inflammatory), I do everything I can to improve that balance. My barn has pasture turnout, and fresh green grass is a great source of Omega 3 fatty acids, so I fed Graysea SmartOmega 3 during the summer when she was able to graze every day. Starting in the fall, when grazing season was coming to an end, I switched her to SmartOmega 3 Ultra, which provides an even higher daily serving of Omega 3s from flax seed, chia seed and fish oil. It feels great knowing the countless health benefits this supplement is providing for her, both inside and out!
Since the stresses of modern horse-keeping often wreak havoc on a horse’s digestive health, I feel strongly that most horses in training, eating grain, and without access to 24/7 grazing time can benefit from a digestive support supplement. In addition to these factors, the other reason I have Graysea on SmartDigest Ultra is that, like most boarding stables, my farm gets new shipments of hay every couple of months. Changing from one load of hay to another is a common cause of loose stool and even colic, but keeping your horse on a daily serving of probiotics and prebiotics can help them weather these fluctuations more easily. I love SmartDigest Ultra because it provides comprehensive support for the entire digestive tract – from stomach to hindgut.
Providing a salt block alone is not enough to meet a horse’s daily salt requirements. During the cooler months, I keep Graysea on the 1 scoop maintenance dose of SmartLytes Pellets. She LOVES the apple-banana flavor, and I love that these sugar-free pellets give her a daily serving of sodium chloride (to keep her drinking plenty of water), along with the other electrolyte minerals. When the warm weather returns and Graysea is sweating again, I plan to add an extra half scoop of SmartLytes Pellets to her SmartPak.
SmartFlex® I Maintenance Pellets:
At SmartPak we really believe that the best joint care is proactive joint care. SmartFlex I Maintenance was designed specifically for young horses and those in light work, which makes it perfect for Graysea, who does groundwork about 5 days per week. As she gets older and I start riding her regularly, I will move her up to SmartFlex II Support.
SmartCalm® Ultra Pellets:
I found SmartCalm Ultra Pellets were a helpful addition to Graysea’s SmartPak once the weather turned cold. The B vitamins and magnesium have helped Graysea stay very level-headed and focused, despite chilly temperatures and “freshness” in the air! I plan to keep her on SmartCalm Ultra Pellets for the rest of the winter, to help us get the most out of our training time together.
Why Jessica Uses SmartPaks
I use the SmartPak feeding system for Graysea’s supplements because in a boarding stable, SmartPaks are hands-down the best option. I know her supplements are fed every day, and that they stay fresh. I also love how easy it is to pack a few when she and I travel to a weekend clinic!

Jessica’s Other Four-Legged Friend
My dog Bailey, a Redbone Coonhound mix with personality to spare, has been coming to work at the SmartPak offices for the 8+ years that I’ve been an employee! In addition to being sticklers about our horses’ diets, we SmartPak employees only feed our dogs the very best, as well. Bailey gets Wellness Super5Mix® Complete Health Lamb, Barley and Salmon dry food in PortionPaks, as well as LiveSmart Hearty Chicken Stew and LiveSmart Harvest Mix. For supplements, I feed Bailey Prozyme digestive enzyme powder, Cosequin DS for joint health, and Deep Sea Salmon Oil, to make sure she gets Omega 3 fatty acids, just like Graysea!
