Ever wish you could take a sneak peek inside our horses’ and dogs’ SmartPaks? Now you can! Check out the supplements we love, for the animals we adore.

This Month’s Pick

Staff Member: Maria T.
Department: Merchandising
Horse: Rivahdude (aka “Riv”), 13 year old Appaloosa gelding
Discipline: Eventing

Having been a dressage rider basically my entire 21 year riding career, I needed a wonder of a horse when I decided that I wanted to learn to jump so that I could take up eventing. Enter Riv, the wonder Appy. A former trail horse, Riv was quite rusty and unfit when it came to dressage, but thankfully that’s my specialty. Quite perfectly for me, his strong suit is jumping. He just loves it. He canters around a course like he’s on a metronome, puts in a good effort over the fences without jumping so hard you get jarred out of the tack, and is ultra, ultra forgiving. I like to say no matter what position I put him in on the approach to the fence, he lands on the other side with a smile on his face. Needless to say, he has been the perfect partner for me in my first eventing endeavor.

We worked and worked and worked all last year and in October competed in our first schooling 3-phase. We had a blast!

SmartFlex® III Resilience Pellets:
Riv is 13 years old and he works moderately hard, so I chose SmartFlex III Resilience Pellets because it has high levels of key ingredients for joint health. I also like that there are ingredients to support Riv’s tendons and ligaments since he does jump a couple of times a week. This level of consistent, moderately hard riding is new to him in his post-trail horse career as an eventer, and he is such a great horse, I want to make sure I do all that I can to help keep him sound.

SmartVite Performance Grass Pellets:
Riv eats less grain than the bag of feed suggests, so he isn’t getting all of the vitamins and minerals that he needs from his feed. SmartVite Performance Grass Pellets helps me to feel confident that he’s got all the vitamins and minerals he needs to stay healthy.

SmartDigest® Ultra:
I chose SmartDigest Ultra to support Riv’s digestive tract. To give him more energy, he eats a sweet feed which can be hard on a horse’s digestive tract. SmartDigest Ultra provides the probiotics, prebiotics and digestive enzymes to keep everything working as it should.

Riv is really sensitive to the bugs. Despite wearing a fly mask, he will scratch his eyes and face until his face is bald. Can you say unsightly? And one time he scratched his face so badly, one of his eyes swelled up. Once I introduced SmartBug-Off, the scratching ceased and the hair started to grow back. Now my plan is to start SmartBug-Off early every year to get ahead of the bugs and the itchiness they cause.

SmartLytes® Pellets

As Low As: $13.73

I also keep a bucket of SmartLytes Pellets in the feed room for intense training sessions or very hot days, to replenish the electrolytes he loses when he’s working really hard, and to encourage him to drink enough in the summer heat.

Why Maria Uses SmartPaks

I board Riv at a local barn. I like that the SmartPaks system makes feeding Riv’s supplements easy for the barn owner. It gives me reassurance that he is getting his supplements each and every day. I also like that I don’t have to worry about ordering buckets of supplements, especially since they always seem to run out at different times during the month. The SmartPaks system makes feeding supplements quick and easy for everyone involved.

I also share my life with the world’s most wonderful Pitbull, Tiki! Tiki has been an employee at SmartPak for 6 years now! Unlike me, Tiki’s job here consists mostly of schmoozing with the other dogs, licking and hugging her many people fans, chewing bones and taking naps. Being a medium sized, very energetic dog, Tiki has torn both of her ACL’s (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) and had two TPLO surgeries to repair them. Any seven-year-old dog, especially one who’s had joint surgery, can benefit from a joint supplement. Tiki takes Advanced Cetyl M Joint Action Formula for Dogs each day. She also eats very healthy. For her kibble portion of her diet, she eats Wellness Simple Solutions Salmon Formula along with our LiveSmart Hearty Salmon Stew. In addition to both of those, Tiki eats many fresh and frozen fruits and veggies such as peas and carrots, blueberries, green beans, apples, local raw honey and the list goes on. When groceries are running low in the house, we have some LiveSmart Harvest Mix on hand for Tiki – it’s an easy way to add fruits and veggies when the fridge and freezer are bare!
