Fun Photos from the SmartPak Fun Show

MollyGinaEllenandEmilythumb

We were so pleased to be able to host our second annual SmartPak Horse Fun Show at Beland Stables in Lakeville, MA last month! We invited SmartPakers and their friends and family to participate, volunteer, or spectate, and all the proceeds went to one of our favorite rescues — Akindale Thoroughbred Rescue in Pawling, NY…

From AAEP’s Ask the Vet: Weight Gain

horse-eating-hay-thumb

I have a warmblood walker cross gelding, 14 years old with good teeth that I cannot get weight on. He moved from VA to CO in October. He then proceeded to go from a body score of 7 to a body score of 4 in 3 months. I have tried the high fat supplements like amplify but he will not eat those. He supposedly gets 25lbs of timothy hay per day from the barn where he stays, plus 3 lbs of complete feed. I have a draft mare of the same size on the same diet and she is very similar BS wise to when she moved out here. I really need him to bulk up fat and muscle to get ready for this summer. Any suggestions?

Judge My Ride Premium Evaluation – Amanda Dawn Garlitz and Ali

JMR-Amanda-Garlitz-and-Ali-

“First thing I notice is the extremely long distance to this small oxer. Ali has reached the top of her arc but her toes have not yet cleared the front rail. Amanda needs to ride to a closer distance. Ali’s legs are up well and she tries hard. She is a bit flat with her neck and back, partly due to the very long distance and partly due to Amanda’s short left hand release. You can see the bit pulled well back in Ali’s mouth. Ali has a very focused expression…”

In the Tack with the Pak – Melissa, Ellie and Gateway

Melissa_Ellie_Gateway-(2)-t

As riders, we know there’s a special connection between us and our horses that’s hard to put into words, but this bond is so strong that even non-riders can sense it. In an effort to better understand this relationship, our staff Photographer, Kristi (one of the few non-riders at SmartPak), will be visiting a different SmartPaker’s barn each month to watch them interact with their horses and learn more about their story as a pair.

Ulcers, GastroGard and Supplements

Ulcer-horse-thumb

“My 6 year old mare has recently been diagnosed with an ulcer. They recommended 14 days of GastroGuard. I see that most of the studies have been done on 30 days of treatment. Do you usually treat for 14 days or longer in your practice? Also is there a supplement you recommend for horses with ulcers? Thank you. Regards, Laurie Bennison”

Luxating Patellas

Luxating-Patella-thumb

“My 5 lb dog has luxating patellas and is now having trouble with her front legs, as well. They seem to “lock up” on her and she doesn’t want to move. She is only 4 and I am considering the surgery, but would like to know if there is some supplemental therapy that might help.” – DM, Georgia

Barn of the Month – Arrowhead Farms

BOTM-Arrowhead-Farms-Thumb

“I have owned and operated Arrowhead Farms, a hunter/jumper boarding facility in Concord, MA for the past 13 years. After first opening my facility in 1999, I soon realized it was becoming a full time job to manage the various supplements for multiple horses. Many owners had horses arriving on supplements that were no longer appropriate for their horse, not to mention my feed room was quickly running out of space…”
