Keeping up with the SmartPakers: Weekend Update – June 18, 2012

During the week, you know our life is no mystery: we are here working hard to make you happier and your horse healthier. But what do we do on the weekend, you ask? The mystery is finally revealed! Read about what SmartPakers did this past weekend and see if any of our adventures sound similar to yours…

“Leroy and I competed in the Adult Amateurs out at Hollyhurst Farm. The entire show went really well! It was blazingly hot but Leroy was fantastic as usual. In this picture, we’re saying our prayers for a good ride”
– Veronica B., Customer Care

“This weekend started off with an early Saturday morning ride. We worked on some things for our upcoming show next weekend and Palermo was awesome! A good way to start the weekend. Then, I went to a wedding Saturday night and then my barn manager’s wedding shower on Sunday.” – Autumn I., Merchandising

“This weekend I accompanied my Mom, and brother, to my dog Ruca’s agility class. The class was a full hour of crazy agility obstacles, laughs, and screaming “RUCA COME BACK!” as she decided to chase after other the other dogs playing in the field, birds, leaves (pretty much anything that moved) every now and then instead of conquering the obstacles.” – Michelle M., Customer Care

“I attended a 2-day natural horsemanship clinic with my appy pony instructed by Tim Hayes. It was fun and enlightening. The only thing wrong with the clinic is that it wasn’t long enough! A week would have been better.”
– Ellen W., Receiving

“I went to a fair near the Merrimack, NH Anheuser-Busch plant for father’s day. The day was filled with great barbeque, an airshow, children’s attractions, and, of course, a visit to the impressive Budweiser Clydesdales. Sebastian (my son) was fascinated and we had a lot of fun feeding his love of horses.” – Kent P., Web Marketing

“I brushed my German Shepard, Zoe. Sounds easy, right? Wrong. Grooming is one of Zoe’s least favorite activities, and as such, I have to practically tie her down to hold her still for brushing. Zoe must make her distaste known the ENTIRE grooming session by whining, groaning, squeaking, and general lamenting. The neighbors must have thought I was torturing my dog. But in the end, this stubborn 10-year-old lady looks and feels awesome! She also seems happier—but that is probably just because the misery has ended.”
– Delia L., Customer Care

“I spent the weekend at the Saratoga Classic Horse Show. I had a great time with my boy Witness competing in the Adult Hunters. Witness was a super star and I couldn’t have been happier with how he went. The best part is I’ll be going back to Saratoga again this weekend and we’ll try our hand at the 3’ USHJA National Hunter Derby.” – Renee P., Merchandising

“I did not do anything horsey, but we went to Six Flags for Father’s Day! My almost 3 year old has been talking about going to a water park for the past year. I’m not sure how he even learned what a water park was, but no matter he wanted to go. We had a blast! And the little guy finally got to go to a water park.”
– Briana K., Customer Care

“My dog Henry and I discovered the local gem Morton Park this weekend! We will be making this an EVERY weekend event now. He loved it!” – Tierney H., Customer Care

“I played Frisbee with my dog and made this sweet video.” – Emily D., Accounting http://youtu.be/XECg3vXKfrs

“Juliet and I and had a great Sunday afternoon ride including cantering around in the open field and jumping over a few logs. She then got a nice bath and grazed in the sun for a little while as she was drying.”
– Katie T., Finance

“On Saturday, Georgetown Cupcakes opened on Newbury Street in Boston, owned by Katherine Kallinis and Sophie LaMontagne, a pair of sisters who have a show on TLC called DC Cupcakes. Myself, my fiancé Anthony, and my sister waited in line for over 2 hours to be one of the first customers of their grand opening store in Boston. We met the girls, they signed their book for us, and we had great cupcakes! It was amazing!”
–Brett C., Customer Care

“My weekend was filled with nature up in the beautiful state of New Hampshire! The weather couldn’t be any more perfect, so we took full advantage and spent our entire weekend outside. We did 2 hikes (Bald Mountain & Indian Head Trail) and some kayaking. I saw my first moose ever, which was pretty awesome!!”
– Lisa M., Marketing

“This summer, I was allowed to plant a garden in the back property of the barn that I ride at. This weekend was spent weeding and replanting some things the bunnies had gotten to before we could get some fencing up. I am a very novice gardener, but hopefully come Fall we will have lots of fresh fruit and veggies to eat!”
– Claire G., I.T.

“We had a 25th birthday party for Killian, a Swedish WB/TB mix, including plates and party hats!”
– Mary C., Customer Care

“I went to the motorcycle rally in Laconia with my dad this weekend.
We rode up together on Saturday, headed down to the beach to check out all the motorcycles and maniacs, and then rode through the White Mountains.

Things I saw:
• A man who squirted water at people while having an enormous parrot on his head.
• A motorcycle with an all M&M’s paint scheme
• A storm moving through the mountains”
– Bjorn M., Web Marketing

“This weekend I participated in my first horse show on my OWN horse! I’ve done showing on leased horses and whatnot, but this was my first show since buying my first horse back in November. Newt (5-year-old Morgan gelding) and I did the Introductory A dressage test, and I was thrilled with how relaxed and confident he was with the whole thing. We ended up with a 64% and placed 2nd out of 4. It was a lot of fun and I was really proud of him!” – Casey F., Customer Care

“We spent a wonderful Father’s Day as a family. We took the kids to the movies to see Madagascar and followed it up by getting their faces painted like lions, which resulted in a day full of roaring from the kids.”
– Kristen I., Marketing

“On Saturday, I went to a local art fair. There were a lot of great artists with their work on display. After that, I grabbed quick lunch from a café and headed to my next adventure: the Myles Standish State Forest. That place is HUGE!!! As an avid photographer I was able to snap some great nature photos. On my walk back to my car I found a white goose family with four little baby goslings. Overall I had a great, adventurous weekend!”
– Nina G., Customer Care

“My sister and I took our horses to Chipaway Stables to try our hand at team sorting! Our third member was an experienced rider who generously volunteered to show us the ropes. So, with some trepidation, we packed up Quick (an Arabian who was originally trained to do saddleseat and is now learning dressage) and Lass (my Quarter Horse, who is kind of a jack of all trades, but has never in her life worked a cow). Lass loves bossing other horses around, and she took to bossing cows around just as quickly. Quick was also surprisingly brave, and definitely enjoyed having some playmates of the bovine variety. I was super happy that the horses handled a new situation so well, and was even happier when we won $50 for third place!” – Caitlin M., Customer Care

“It started out a typical Saturday riding lesson. Sun shining, outdoor ring packed with boarders hacking their horses, and me warming up for a jumping lesson. My 19 year-old horse, Excel, has retired from showing, but we still lesson once a week, mostly on the flat, fitting a jumping lesson in here and there. When the jumping began, Excellie was TOTALLY into it! The 2’9” crossrails came up easily, the scary brush box oxer wasn’t nearly as scary as it usually is and then he decided the 3’ stone wall was his for the taking! We hadn’t jumped 3’ since last year and I was wondering if that had become just too much for the former Hi Adult Jumper, but clearly it wasn’t. I was grinning ear-to-ear like a 9 year old jumping her pony for the first time!” – Susan T., Barn Sales

“I had a great ride on Sunday and Hale likes to “talk” when I’m tacking him up. I got a great pick of him telling me how ready he was to go.” :) – Martha B., Customer Care

“After a brilliant horse show and Training level cross-country school last week, my horse had some time off while I got to do some ‘eventing’ of my own. I got to run through the woods, jump over walls and splash through mud on my own two feet at the Boston Ruckus. It is such a blast seeing what you can accomplish with a little help and a lot of high fives from fellow SmartPakers (like Sarah Paull, Dodd Corby, Cathlin Bosch, Meghan Law, Sara Ross, and Jason Nappi).” – Sara. F., Creative

Apparently I've been obsessed with horses since I was born, and I used to beg for pony rides on a regular basis. I started showing in 4-H, progressed to equitation and jumpers in high school and rode on the IHSA team in college where I also discovered the joys...
