Keeping up with the SmartPakers: Weekend Update – July 9, 2012

During the week, you know our life is no mystery: we are here working hard to make you happier and your horse healthier. But what do we do on the weekend, you ask? The mystery is finally revealed! Read about what SmartPakers did this past weekend and see if any of our adventures sound similar to yours…

“On Sunday, my horse and I went up to Course Brook Farm in Sherborn, MA for a cross country school with some barn friends. Diem (my horse) was really great and we had a blast. We’re lucky enough to have a full cross country field at my home barn (Valinor Farms in Plymouth, MA), but it’s always nice to go somewhere new. Course Brook had lots of really awesome banks, which we don’t have as many of, so it was a great experience. The perfect weather didn’t hurt either!” – Sara F., Creative

“This weekend I showed at one of my favorite shows, the NHHJA Summer Festival. Keeping with the holiday theme, we brought home a handful of blue and red ribbons (most exciting: 1st in the Classic and 2nd in the Derby)! Erik was amazing and as always, couldn’t do it without a great horse and team behind me. :)”
– Annie C., Marketing

“This weekend my mare Luna and I attended a local dressage show. Although warm, it was a beautiful day and she was a rock star! Luna loves showing, especially the part where all eyes are on her. We won First Level Test 2 and were second in First Level Test 3. I was especially proud because we haven’t shown First 3 before! It was a wonderful day and I’m looking forward to our next show together.” – Kerri V., Marketing

“Stella, my husband and I enjoyed our annual vacation to Nantucket last week. We went surfing and spent most days on the beach. Stella loves the beach too!” – Renee P., Merchandising

“I got picked to be a Grand Juror on Friday. I will be attending Grand Jury duty for the next 3 months. That’s all I can say about that. :)” – Gina F., Finance

“Last weekend I had fun watching all of the competitors at the Area 1 – Groton House Horse Trials! I got to see amazing athletes and enjoy amazing weather!” – Christie J., Customer Care

“Trailered to the Berkshires to compete at the Old Chatham Horse Trials with my horse, Timex. My barn-mate (and SmartPak customer), Ann, came along with her Canadian Sport Horse, Fenway. I insisted on wearing my spiffy microfiber show coat for dressage, so that the pics would look good (despite coats being waived due to the heat) – bad call. Between being thoroughly overheated and trying to keep my very fit and excited horse in the ring, I got distracted and incurred an error on my test (serious rookie move). But, on to the fun stuff – Timex jumped GREAT. He’s amazing and we’re building a strong partnership for the future. His stadium looked like a hunter round and he cruised effortlessly over cross-country. We ended up finishing 5th in our division. And, Ann and Fenway took home the blue in theirs! Long haul home in holiday traffic, but celebrated with cold Blue Moons after returning safely to the farm.” – Colby B., Marketing

“This weekend Colby and I had an exciting time at the ENYDCTA Old Chatham Horse Trails in New York. Colby and her horse Timex placed 5th in their novice division! My thoroughbred Punch and I were second after dressage (yes, miracles do happen) and completed stadium and cross country.
The Old Chatham horse trails is one of the New York events that incorporates the Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P) into its divisions. Riders with off the track thoroughbreds are rewarded with cash prizes if they are successful in their division. Although Punch and I did not get the cash prize, I am super excited that there is finally a program to encourage new careers for all the young OTTB’s. And don’t worry, we’ll win that $$$ next time! For more info about the T.I.P. you can visit Go Thoroughbreds! :)”

“Saturday night was the first game of the season for my boyfriend Matt’s semi-pro football team, the Taunton Gladiators. Matt’s passion for football is like my passion for horses, so it’s really cool to be able to share that with him.” – Michelle M., Customer Care

“On Sunday it was too hot to do much… So I pulled Graysea’s mane and we had a little photo shoot. I’m trying to do a good job documenting her dapples before they’re all gone! :)” – Jessica N., Marketing

“I went to the WBRU free summer concert series in Providence and saw Group Love! It was an awesome concert and it was a night out without the little guy! The crowd was great and everyone had a great time. There were even kayakers and canoers in the water to watch the show. One lucky couple even got a gondola ride right up to the back of the stage! We got there right as the show started so we couldn’t wiggle our way onto the hill right in front of the stage, but we found a great little spot on the other side of the river to watch from.”
– Briana K., Customer Care

“Sarah and I had a bonfire on the beach and our SmartPak Eco-Tote bag was perfect for all of the s’mores ingredients!” – Sarah G. and Marisa C., Customer Care

“My horse, Ax, actually had a case of impaction colic all day Friday and Saturday. I had the vet out multiple times and I was really worried. Luckily she started feeling better on Saturday night . She had passed the blockage and was almost back to normal by Sunday, so I didn’t end up having to cancel my plans to go sailing, which meant the weekend wasn’t a total bust. My friends and I spent the day in Buzzards Bay relaxing on the boat, swimming, and playing frisbee on the beach. The first picture is of my friend Jen and I on the boat. Jen just graduated from vet school and was a HUGE help with Ax this weekend (thanks Jen!). The second picture is of Ax checking out the bran mash we were trying to convince her to eat. By the way, I am now going to start giving Ax SmartLytes, at the vet’s recommendation, since we think this weekend’s colic episode was caused by decreased water intake in the heat.” – Emily D., Accounting

“I beat the heat and had a fabulous time sailing on Saturday in Marina Bay in Boston!”
– Leslee M., Customer Care

“I took my first Dressage lesson ever this weekend! My OTTB Rex had a bone chip removed a couple of months ago, so he isn’t going to be jumping for a while. I am a hunter/jumper rider but almost everyone else at my barn rides dressage, so I figured why not give it a try?! I think that Rex and I both learned a lot and I am really looking forward to the next one!” – Kaitlyn Z., Customer Care

“I am currently still at home in IL (I’m heading back to Boston today). I spent the week off of work hanging out with my family and celebrating the 4th of July. The highlights of the week (which I’m counting as my weekend because I was off work all week): we took a family trip to the Museum of Science and Industry, I got my Italian beef fix at Portillos (it’s a Chicago thing), and I went to an awesome 4th of July party put on by the owners of my old barn here in IL.” – Katie G., Customer Care

“My boyfriend and I went exploring in downtown Plymouth on Sunday. We visited a bunch of little souvenir shops, walked through some of the historic landmarks and saw the recreation of the Mayflower. It was really nice to see the history of the town in person. We ended our day with a visit to the famous Plymouth Rock, though it wasn’t nearly as big as I had originally thought, but I can at least say I’ve seen it now.” – Kristina S., Customer Care

“Went out on my brother’s boat down on the Cape and my 9 year old niece went fishing for the first time. We had 4 poles in the water but all the fish were going to Lindsey’s. She caught at least 6 Scup and even 1 Sand Shark! Don’t worry, they don’t have teeth but they do look like a mini Great White. Her expression when pulling them in was priceless and I’m so glad she had fun.” – Angie P., Merchandising

“Last week I was too busy having two men play tug of war with me to give a weekend update. I know that sounds risqué, but I was a bridesmaid in my best friend’s wedding and had two groomsmen to walk in to the reception with and we had to come up with a funny entrance. They fought over me, shook hands, then linked arms with me and walked me in! It was entertaining, but nice to go back to my own boyfriend and enjoy one of the few times we were able to “dress up.” Since I had been so busy with the wedding, I wasn’t able to spend much time with Lurch, the horse I lease, last weekend. This weekend I spent lots of time with him doing his favorite things- spraying him in the face with the hose and letting him roll!” – Jess D., Customer Care

  1. Laura Cunningham says:

I went horse camping for the first time in years. My horse, Tang, is 1/2 Belgian/1/2 quarter horse (a PMU offspring). She has had experience in the woods in her earlier life (she’s 10), but not with me. I’ve only had her since February, and we’re still getting to know each other. There were wonderful rides, fun with friends and meeting new friends.

  2. My horse, Royce and I enjoyed a nice cooling bath party!
