Keeping up with the SmartPakers: Weekend Update – November 12, 2012

During the week, you know our life is no mystery: we are here working hard to make you happier and your horse healthier. But what do we do on the weekend, you ask? The mystery is finally revealed! Read about what SmartPakers did this past weekend and see if any of our adventures sound similar to yours…

“This weekend, I went with some of my SmartPak friends and my boyfriend, Mac, to Equine Affaire. It was the first time Mac had been, and it was fun to bring him into the craziness. It was great getting to see all of our awesome customers and interact with them face to face. Surprisingly, my will power was great this year, and I didn’t even buy anything! I was very proud of myself. The next day, Mac and I went to visit my horse, Cocoa. It was great to take advantage of the warm weather and ride outside. Cocoa was a perfect angel. Mac even hopped on and rode her around for a bit. After all the crazy weather we’ve been having it was nice to enjoy a fun horsey weekend outside.” – Kristina, Customer Care

“Last week I was lucky enough to travel to Northern California to visit my sister and her husband. We had an incredible time hiking in Yosemite National Park, touring San Francisco, and enjoying the gorgeous vistas and vineyards of Napa. I can’t wait to go back!” – Meghan, Marketing

“The family went to Orlando last week and experienced the worlds of Disney and Universal Studios. I’m not sure it was a relaxing vacation, but it sure was fun! Our destinations included two world-famous castles: Cinderalla’s and Harry Potter’s. I then went on the lookout for a potential new market for SmartPak at Animal Kingdom!”
– Jon, IT

“My husband, Peter, and I went to the Charles Playhouse on Sunday to see Blue Man Group for my birthday—it was a great show and we highly recommend! They are very strict about taking photos inside so we weren’t able to get any pictures, but for a fun night out it’s worth it and of course there are TONS of great restaurants to visit before or after the show.” – Wendy, Accounting

“I made the most of a warm-ish, sunny New England weekend to get outside for some running and riding. Running is something I picked up earlier this year, but the hobby really took route while I was in London for the Games—now I’m hooked. I’ve done half a dozen races this fall and did my first trail race this past weekend. The Edaville Rail Run is a 5-mile race winding through cranberry bogs not far from Plymouth. The event was a lot of fun, and I was very happy with how it went for me. Can’t quite compare to galloping cross country, but a well-run race is a rush all its own—pacing well so that I can run the end of the race faster, pick people off in the final mile, and cross the finish line feeling strong. After the race, I headed out to the barn to ride my horse,Timex. He was a saint as I schooled him around a vaulting clinic that was taking place in our indoor arena. He was un-phased by the kids running around and jumping on and off horses and quietly focused on 10-meter figure eights and shoulder-fore despite the commotion. We jumped outside on Sunday and he was excited, but very good. It is always a sad milestone when the jumps come into the indoor for the winter and every extra weekend we get to ride outside is a gift to be treasured, and we made the most of it.” – Colby, Marketing

“Last weekend was all about getting my holiday card photos taken! My two horses, Milo (in the Santa hat) and Galli, were great, especially since there was lots of bribery with peppermints. My barn has a 5-acre field that the horses graze in and that we ride in, and it’s a beautiful backdrop for photos. My dog Lola (in front with the silver bow) was a good little model, too! And thankfully, I had the help of my best friend Lauren to assist while my dad took our photos. This weekend was all about the EQUINE AFFAIRE! My first week as a SmartPaker, I designed the SmartPak Ultimate Turnout banner for the tradeshow booth and had to get a picture in front of it. Watching Anne Gribbons teach in the Coliseum was incredible; she is so classically minded and was so encouraging, it was really inspiring as a lower level dressage rider. Sunday, I took an easy ride on Galli in our big field, with Lauren on Milo. It was a gorgeous afternoon for a leisurely hack!” – Kristin, Creative

“Yesterday I spent the afternoon with my family watching football movie-theater style in my uncle’s barn-turned-pottery-studio.” – Laura, Customer Care

“Last weekend I spent some time in Vermont with Elizabeth from Customer Care. The mountains and the snow were beautiful and very relaxing. This weekend, I went from country to city and spent the weekend in Washington, DC! We got to see the Natural History Museum, the Botanical Gardens, and the zoo. Lots of walking, good friends, and good food both weekends!” – Claire, IT

“We went to Congress two weekends ago in Ohio and bought a new trailer!” – Ellen, Production

“I’ve been getting the full New England tour lately, recently in Vermont (including a visit to the grave of Justin Morgan) and then off to Equine Affaire in Springfield, Massachusetts. SmartPak had a great time, despite the snow, rain and wind!” – Elizabeth, Customer Care

“Here’s a couple of pictures from Sunday. I smoked a beef brisket for 9 hours. Delicious.” – Matt, IT

“My weekend got off to a great (early) start on Thursday afternoon when I gave a blanketing presentation to a full house at Equine Affaire Massachusetts. As a former member of the SmartPak Customer Care Team, I love, love, LOVE helping horse owners take better care of their horses! If you missed it, don’t fret, you can tune into our blanketing webinar this Wednesday, 11/14 at 12PM or 7PM EST. My other weekend highlight was a really awesome hike in the Blue Hills Reservation with fellow SmartPaker Bjorn and his feisty little dog, Sprocket.”
– Sarah, Marketing

“I had a busy weekend as usual. On Saturday, I baked cupcakes for a 6-year-old’s birthday party. After the birthday festivities were done for the day (and after squeezing in some necessary horsey-time), my boyfriend and I went to see some local bands play, which was a lot of fun. On Sunday morning, we took my dog Morgan for a long walk on the trails near my house. She had a great time splashing in the lake and chasing sticks. It was a great weekend, and we finished it off with football and a lovely home-cooked dinner.” – Emily, Accounting

“This weekend my father and sister came for a visit from PA. On Saturday, we toured the Plymouth area, visited the Whaling Museum in New Bedford (complete with amazing whale skeletons), and ate dinner in Providence, RI. The weather was beautiful, and we all enjoyed seeing some new places. We were also able to fit in a quick visit to see Ollie, the adorable horse that I ride. He enjoyed showing off his mud stains from the storm earlier in the week and stuffing himself with peppermints.” – Delia, Customer Care

“This weekend, after a 5-month hiatus from riding, I got back in the saddle again! A friend invited me to take a lesson on her new horse, a 6-year-old Andalusian named Alano (also known as Fabio around the barn). I had a great ride and am hoping I might be able to visit again soon!” – Katie, Customer Care

“I took this picture of Chris (a fellow boarder) while we were out with the Gator cleaning manure from the horse pastures. She was actually much, much happier than her expression makes her appear. With the time change and winter on its way, we figured this might be one of our last weekends to help reduce the parasite burden on the horses’ grazing area. A quick spread on the neighbor school’s garden then a bowl of chowder makes for a fine day!” – Dr. Lydia Gray, Staff Veterinarian
