Keeping up with the SmartPakers: Weekend Update – January 7, 2013

During the week, you know our life is no mystery: we are here working hard to make you happier and your horse healthier. But what do we do on the weekend, you ask? The mystery is finally revealed! Read about what SmartPakers did this past weekend and see if any of our adventures sound similar to yours…

“Traveled up to the north shore for a fantastic lesson with a good friend – always fun to catch up and learn at the same time! We had to move inside due to a very cold and persistent wind, but it was a beautiful day. Photo credits to Abby Clutz – thanks for braving the cold!” – Jen, Store Manager

I moved my horse Hale to a new barn this weekend and he didn’t waste any time making friends with his next door neighbor! I think they make a very cute pair! I’m excited to have him settled and to start getting in shape for spring. – Martha, Customer Care

“Over the weekend we traveled to Ocala, FL for our annual spring western photo shoot. This year we did it at Dave Davis Quarter Horses in Ocala. It was a great shoot and we had lots of fun. Here is Adam shooting one of our models while one of Dave’s young horses was trying to “help out” from a nearby paddock.”
– Becki, Marketing

“This past weekend my boyfriend and I worked on our “extreme home makeover” (it’s not really that extreme…). The new house does have a lot of work to be done though, and of that work, we’ve started painting the rooms! Fresh new colors and coats of paint are really making a difference in the rooms of the house. There’s still trim to be fixed up and floors to be finished (happening today!) but once all those other parts of the project come together, it will look like new!” – Michelle, Customer Care

“I had a fun weekend with friends and family. I got to spend some time with my sister who is in grad school at Syracuse and also had a fun play-day with fellow SmartPaker and friend Jessica. She came to visit and play with my Morgan, Newt, and is actually in the process of possibly buying her own Morgan! We each got a chance to ride around in the snow, and Newt was such a good boy.” 🙂 – Casey, Barns Team

“I’ve been taking advantage of the wintery weather with my animals. Ax and I enjoyed a relaxing trail ride during the snowfall. Then, a friend and I took my dog Morgan for a hike. We ended up playing fetch on a frozen lake, which made for some great photos as well as a very tired pup.” – Emily, Accounting

“I signed up for the month long “Winter Warrior” challenge a local running store organized. Basically, I need to run at least 3 miles a day every day in January to win a t-shirt (and bragging rights). As of today, I’m still in it, but the New England weather has presented some unique challenges. With single-digit temps and snow and ice to deal with, I’ve fashioned together a pretty interesting running outfit complete with an assortment of bright colors, reflective patches and ice cleats for my trail shoes. I look pretty ridiculous (especially when I wear my headlamp), but so far I’ve been safe and warm-ish. After taking it easy for a few weeks, this is serving as good motivation and conditioning for the Hyannis half marathon I signed up for in late February.” – Colby, Marketing

“This past weekend 4 SmartPakers were down in Wellington, Florida for a couple photoshoots for our upcoming Spring 2013 catalog. We meet many beautiful horses and dogs along the way. My favorite horse model is named Beach Bum. He is a retired Grand Prix jumper and is now 27 years old. You’d never be able to guess his age though, he looks half that age. I’ve known him for about 4 years now and he is one of my favorite horses that I’ve met. He has been on the cover of the SmartPak catalog and in countless other SmartPak photographs. He has a wonderful outgoing and fun personality and he LOVES to model. As soon as he hears the camera click, he flicks both ears forward and works some modeling magic. It is impossible for this horse to take a bad photo! Beachy makes the sweetest nickering sounds when he hears a peppermint wrapper. It’s something that just melts my heart. It is these types of simple moments that reminds me how much I love horses.”
– Renee, Merchandising

“Last weekend, I was in sunny Florida enjoying one of the most challenging and rewarding parts of my job—our annual spring photo shoot! One of my favorite horse models this year was a gorgeous mare named Sandrina. She modeled our Harwich Dressage Bridle as well as some of our brand new dress sheets. She also showed off her gorgeous extended trot while we took some pictures of Team SmartPak Rider Shannon Dueck. A big thanks goes to all the barn managers, grooms, riders, owners and horses who help make our photo shoots so wonderful!” – Sara, Creative

“I was moving some rocks and accidentally smashed my thumb. Hopefully I won’t lose the thumbnail!” – Matt, IT

Matt, heat a nail to red hot over a flame, and put it in the darkest part where most of the blood is. Let it burn a hole (you won’t feel it) and release that blood. Otherwise, sorry dude, you’re gonna lose that nail! I know because my dad is a carpenter and has had many a purple nail for one reason or another! Hang in there! California Gal, Susan

Matt. I lost a nail (unloading bedding) that had been completely black and separating from nail bed since rescue of a litter of kittens 6 weeks ago. I would have preferred drilling the pinhole to 6 weeks of “what did you do” “horse ? ” and “you do know you are going to loose that nail dont you?” drilling would not have saved it but I was to cowardly to remove it. Toenail took year to grow out. hope finger is quicker.
