I’ve owned my horse for 12 years this year, and I always make it a point to celebrate her birthday. I don’t like to give her treats regularly, because they trigger her impulse to crib, so March 16 is the one day a year when I can spoil her and show her a little appreciation for carting me around for over a decade.
On the morning of Ax’s birthday, I got a big bowl, sliced up some apples and carrots, drizzled with molasses, and topped with Ax’s favorite horse cookie, the Cantering Chef Horse cookies. I also brought cupcakes for the humans at the barn to enjoy. When I presented her with the bowl, she was a happy pony indeed!
I took her for a short hack afterwards, though I got the distinct impression that she felt she shouldn’t have to work on her birthday!
