Peek in Our Tack Trunks – Kerri V

Kerri Luna

First off, I’d like to admit that I don’t actually have one trunk, I have three! Well, technically four if you count the small one, but to keep this to a blog and not a book, I’ll just cover my everyday favorites. I’m a dressage rider and my mare Luna and I are schooling Second Level. Here are a few products from SmartPak that we can’t live without.

The Cantering Chef Horse Treats
Luna would say these are the most important thing in our tack trunk — plenty of treats! The Banana Blast is her absolute favorite flavor, and she has been known to nicker for more. I love that these treats have natural, healthy ingredients and feel good about rewarding her with them. The delicious banana smell is an added bonus — I’ll admit, I’ve been tempted to try them in moments of hunger.

ThinLine Trifecta Cotton Half Pad with Sheepskin Rolls
This is my favorite half pad of all time, and Luna’s too. It combines the best aspects of several different pads, all in one. First, there’s the Ultra Thinline material, which helps absorb shock and protect Luna’s back. I love that this pad has relief across the spine and withers so it fits perfectly. Next, the cotton underside is thin and breathable and washes easily. And lastly the sheepskin rolls make this pad look like a traditional sheepskin half pad without the bulk. This pad is a staple for everyday schooling and washes up easily for shows, too.

Keratex Hoof Gel
This is my go-to hoof topical and it helps keep Luna’s feet in top condition (along with her SmartHoof Ultra Keratex Hoof Gel is an awesome product that helps seal out excess moisture to keep hoof walls strong and healthy. It’s especially handy during the summer — I apply it before hosing her off to avoid the damaging effects of wet/dry cycles. My farrier and I are both much happier since I added this product to my tack trunk!

SmartPak Small Diamond Deluxe Dressage Saddle Pad
This is an excellent everyday dressage pad that holds up well and looks great. The small diamond style looks neat and tidy, especially with the rope trim on this pad. I have the navy color, which hides the dirt and washes up well. I also had Luna’s name embroidered on this pad, which helps me keep track of which pad is mine, and also reflects her princess personality. The fit and durability of this pad are unmatched for the price, making it one of my favorite schooling pads.

Endure Sweat Resistant Fly Spray
With summer approaching, you’ll never find me without a bottle of Endure fly spray. It’s been unbeatable for me in terms of effectiveness, long lasting protection, and I love that it doesn’t sweat off. Luna gets sprayed once in the morning and once when I ride her and this long-lasting spray protects her day and night. I also like that it contains sunscreen; since Luna is black, keeping her coat dark and shiny is a top priority. Although she tends to be sensitive to some sprays, this one doesn’t bother her a bit and I feel better knowing she isn’t being tormented by flies in turnout.

Effax Leather Cream Soap
I really don’t know how I lived without this everyday tack cleaner. I will admit I am not the most diligent about cleaning my tack, but since I purchased a new saddle last December I have tried to be better about it. This all-in-one cleaner/conditioner makes it so easy! I don’t need to add water or deal with using two products — just a simple wipe down and it’s done. I especially like that this product is not greasy, but instead it leaves leather with a smooth grip. And lastly, it smells great, so tack cleaning is almost enjoyable.

Canter Silk Mane & Tail Conditioner
This detangler is a must-have for both every day use and shows. I try not to brush Luna’s tail too frequently, in order to preserve the length and thickness of it. That means that when I do brush her tail out, there are some serious tangles to tackle. This product takes care of them without any trouble. I spray it on before I ride, let it work its magic, and brush out a soft, silky tail afterwards. I also love it for show days to keep her hair tangle-free and looking great in the ring. A little goes a long way, so a bottle lasts me several months.

Roeckl Chester Glove
These gloves are a SmartPak best-seller, and with good reason. They have excellent grip, are thin, lightweight, and hold up well. I can even use my smartphone with them on, which is an added bonus. I like that they are durable while still being soft and pliable, and they are just the right weight for use during the spring, summer and fall.

Harwich Padded Dressage Bridle by SmartPak
Luna and I adore this bridle for both everyday use and showing. One of our favorite features is the innovative crown, which allows the cavesson strap to pass over the crown so that only soft padding touches her sensitive poll. It also has a padded noseband and browband, and overall the fit is excellent. The leather is durable yet soft and cleans up nicely for shows. I also have the Nantucket Swarovski Crystal Browbands by SmartPak for a little extra bling when showing, and it looks awesome on this bridle. Last but not least the nonslip rubber web reins are thin yet grippy and allow for excellent contact.
