I’ve been looking forward to spring and the arrival of warmer weather for a lot of reasons (like being able to ride without feeling like a marshmallow under five layers of clothes), but there’s one thing about spring that I always dread – the arrival of the bugs.
The first summer I had Superman, I quickly learned that he is super sensitive when it comes to bugs. Besides all of the stomping and swishing that occurred whenever a bug landed on him, he also frequently came in from turnout covered in bumps from bug bites. Superman loves his turnout time and I love riding him outside, so I’ve learned to take a well-rounded approach to battling the bugs.
As a longtime rider, I’ve tried just about every fly spray there is available to try. There are so many fly sprays available at so many different price points that it’s hard to know what to buy! This year I decided to start the bug season off with Absorbine’s UltraShield EX Fly Spray. One of the big pluses of this fly spray is that it’s sweat resistant, so even when it gets hot and Superman starts sweating, he won’t sweat it all off. In addition to being super sensitive to bugs (and just about everything else under the sun), Superman has pretty sensitive skin. Some products bother his skin, but I haven’t had any trouble with this fly spray irritating him.
In addition to making sure there’s always a bottle of fly spray for Superman to get sprayed with before turnout, he also wears a fly sheet to keep him happy when he’s out during fly season. The fly sheet he wore last summer was a hand-me-down from a horse that I owned before him and has definitely seen better days, so this year I decided to get him a brand new one. After doing a lot of research on the different fly sheets available, I decided to get him the SmartPak Deluxe Fly Sheet. It’s made of a really lightweight mesh and comes with a detachable neck cover so his whole body is covered and protected. The added bonus of this sheet is that the fabric is infused with InsectShield, an insect repellent that provides yet another layer of defense against the bugs.
Superman’s final line of defense is SmartBug-Off. Before I worked at SmartPak, I didn’t know that there were awesome supplements like this one that could help fight flies. I like SmartBug-Off because of its comprehensive approach. It includes garlic, brewer’s yeast, and apple cider vinegar to help deter biting bugs and diatomaceous earth to discourage insect breeding in manure. I love that it also provides omega 3 fatty acids, MSM and antioxidants to support a normal inflammatory response and healthy skin.
With the combination of SmartBug-Off, a good fly spray, and a quality fly sheet, I know that I’m protecting Superman from the inside out so that he can stay happy and healthy this fly season.
