July 7-11, 2014 is National Farriers Week
Your hoof care professional is an invaluable member of your horse’s health team, so don’t forget to show your gratitude for his/her hard work during National Farriers Week!

Here are five fun ideas for how you can say ‘thank you for taking such great care of my horse’s feet’

  1. Have a cup of coffee or a nice cold drink waiting at your next appointment
  2. Bake cookies, brownies or some other delicious treat
  3. A gas gift card makes a very thoughtful gift for a professional who’s always on the road
  4. Gift cards for coffee are also sure to be a hit!
  5. Consider a Back on Track product to help ease a hard workin’ back (or knees or whatever else needs some TLC!)

When my farrier was my husband, and I was a practicing massage therapist, he was grateful for the body work. So, you might have a really great farrier, and he may be serving several horses at your barn….If there are a few folks, and someone could find out if he would sit still for body work, lie still I mean. A gift certificate for a decent massage would be a spectacular gift.

Why wait until a designated week to show your appreciation? I tell my farrier how grateful I am for his help and expertise on every visit. Often I give him something to reinforce my gratitude such as an extra tip or a referral for a service he might need. Not too long ago I was able to give him a coupon for a discount on new tires – just when he needed them! I tell him often how important he is to me and my horses. I would’ve lost my mare if it wasn’t for his care over the years.

We all need to hear and know how valuable we are on a regular basis. I believe in making my feelings known often!

My farrier is one of my many blessings. Last year, laminitis was discovered in my rescue mare. His quick work with trimming, pads and shoes saved the life of my wonderful girl. I always learn something about equines every time he works on her. He is patient and kind. Last Christmas, I got him a corn bag for heat/cold therapy and I always make sure that some extra cash goes to him whenever he works on my horse.
