Horse of the Month: “Daisy”
PATH Intl Certified Center: Hearts & Hooves
Location: Sherwood, AR
Meet “Daisy”, our SmartPak Horse of the Month for July. Daisy is an 8 year old mare who has recently jumped into her job as a therapy horse with all four feet. She is patient with her special riders and enjoys getting to interact with people. She is a bright young horse with loads of potential, and learns quickly. It’s clear to the staff and riders at Hearts & Hooves that Daisy loves her job when she comes to greet anyone who comes to get her in the field.
One of her favorite activities is the Hippotherapy program, or HPOT. HPOT promotes the use of the movement of the horse as a treatment strategy in scripted physical, occupational and speech therapy sessions for people living with disabilities. Her short stature is ideal for this program and enables eye contact between a rider and a therapist. She has shown good patience and tolerance with all of our riders even when they get over excited. We are so happy to have sweet Daisy in our program and expect that she will become a favorite horse of many of our riders over the years
Daisy also participates in the youth-at risk program. This program specifically targets youth who are at risk in society due to various circumstances (single parent, low income, incarcerated family members, etc.). Activities revolve around the horse but are not always mounted lessons. She has allowed several children ages 10-17 to be around her at once; grooming, petting, and rubbing her. Most recently she was working with 4 young girls who had never touched a horse before. Daisy was calm and affectionate towards the girls. Daisy willingly allowed these 4 girls to groom her simultaneously and became so comfortable that she propped her hip, lowered her head, and her eyes were soft and relaxed
In her down time, Daisy enjoys spending her time in the field with Vaal.
