What inspired the development of this formula?
SmartPaker Jessica: As is often the case, our inspiration came from horse owners like you, who asked for a bone support formula! We knew we didn’t want a traditional mineral product, so we waited until we were comfortable with a unique selection of ingredients that would help support healthy bone matrix in horses. Probably the most inspirational factor was learning about the benefits of supplementing with boron. This trace mineral supports cell wall integrity, and there is evidence supporting its actions in bone growth and turnover, as well as wound healing and a healthy inflammatory response. Boron is also involved in the absorption and function of several other key nutrients critical to strong, healthy bone such as calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D.
What are the key ingredients in this formula, and why did you choose them?
SmartPaker Jessica: As I mentioned earlier, boron is a cornerstone ingredient of the formula, and we’ve included a blend of three sources of this mineral, for optimal bioavailability. SmartOsteo also contains hydrolyzed collagen, the main structural protein in connective tissues throughout the body, including bone. In addition, we included silica, another element that’s key to strong bones. Research has shown that silica supports bone growth and density, while helping to combat bone loss and thinning. To complement this selection of specialized ingredients, the SmartOsteo formula is rounded out by thoughtful levels of calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, vitamin D3, and vitamin K3.
What type of horse is this supplement for?
SmartOsteo was designed for any horse whose veterinarian recommends supplemental support for normal bone strength, thickness, and density, or to support optimal healing. This might include active performance horses, those just entering a training or conditioning program for the first time, horses that are having their workload “stepped up” from light/moderate to heavy/very heavy, and any horses gradually returning to exercise after a layup as part of a rehabilitation program.
