ZuCarlina, my pony mare, has been with me for 18 years, and is now 22. The last few years have been rough for her; after foundering in December of 2005, and being diagnosed with Cushings, she came down with a minor, mysterious lameness one day in her paddock May of 2008, and by July she had lymphangitis in all 4 legs, spent 10 days at the hospital, and was diagnosed with suspensory desmitis. She started to heal, and then in November flared up again, and her vet recommended euthanasia based on her radiographs, showing “failure of suspensory apparatus, migration of sesamoids, luxated pastern and severe broken axis of p1, 2 and 3” of her left front, and her ultrasound showing “severe swelling and disruption of fibers in superficial flexor tendon and severe swelling of suspensory ligament.” As she still had a fantastic attitude, was eating well and still enjoyed life, I opted to do the anti-inflammatory and stall rest route, with small amounts of hand walking.
We put her on SmartTendon to help support the healing tissues, and have since incorporated SmartVite Senior for general nutrition and APF to help overall health. She now goes out, trots and occasionally canters in her paddock (on her own), and enjoys hand walking. The leg is visually odd, but is cool and tight and is otherwise functional. Her vet came out to see her and did spring shots last year, watched her move about and was surprised at how well she did; when I called to set up the appointment for shots he thought he was putting her down.
I appreciate SmartPak in so many ways; I like knowing that I can place an order and get our delivery the next day. With two animals having health issues, it is good to know that I don’t have to worry about running out of one medication or another. Thanks for making it easier to continue enjoying my “special needs” girls!
