My journey with horses started when I was 9 years old. My grandma gave me a lesson for Christmas and as they say, the rest is history! I started in the hunter/jumper ring and then transitioned into the eventing world. After my first horse, Kirby (who still lives in my parents’ backyard), retired suddenly, I spent two years searching for my next partner in crime. I generally don’t believe in love at first sight, but sparks flew the moment I saw Kucha.
Kucha and I enjoyed a successful career in eventing and in 2007 I found Natural Horsemanship. He and I had the opportunity to spend a summer studying at the Parelli International Study Center in 2009, and we are currently working on achieving our Level 3 Certification. We love to hit the trails, herd geese in pastures (which is huge for a horse that used to be terrified of sparrows!) and are hoping to get to a hunter pace this year!
Kucha’s SmartPaksMy friends tease me that my horse’s diet is more balanced than mine! But making sure that my horse is getting his daily dose of vitamins and minerals is top priority in my book. I use SmartVite Performance Grass Pellets to balance Kucha’s current nutrition program.
Being an off-the-track Thoroughbred with many miles under his belt, Kucha is a perfect candidate for SmartCombo Ultra Pellets. I had been using separate supplements to support his joints, hooves and digestive tract, but Mr. Kucha is what we call a bit of a picky eater. He is skilled at picking out the goodies and leaving the rest behind! Thankfully, the solution to my problem came in the form of one, easy-to-feed, pelleted supplement. The icing on the cake is the fact that he is also getting support for a shiny coat!
Over the years, Kucha has become prone to scratches. Large patches of scratches would show up a week or two after travel. Through my training at SmartPak, I have learned that stressors, such as long distance travel, can take a toll on the immune system (it’s also been suggested that scratches can somehow be related to decreased immunity). After trying multiple topicals, I decided to add APF (Advanced Protection Formula) to his program. Within two weeks of adding APF (it comes in his SmartPak on a SmartWafer), his scratches were practically gone! This blend of adaptogenic herbs is a permanent part of Kucha’s program because of the support it gives to the immune system and because it helps combat day-to-day stress that can come from a variety of factors—spending time in a stall, training, hay changes, etc.
Why Kristen Uses SmartPaks
I use SmartPaks for Kucha’s supplements because in a boarding stable, they are far and away the best option. I know that no matter who is feeding, Kucha will get the correct dose of fresh supplements every single day!
