Last fall, I started my search for a new horse. I’ve always had older, experienced horses, but this time I decided that I wanted to get a younger horse to bring along in the hunter ring. A few months into the hunt, a six-year-old mare came in for me to try, I fell in love, and we quickly decided that she was a keeper. We have the goal of eventually doing the 3’ hunters, lower level derbies, and maybe even the 3’6” hunters, but for now we’re focusing on our flatwork and working over small jumps.
Once Sasha was officially mine, her SmartPak was the first thing that I ordered for her. I want her to have all of the support she needs to stay happy and healthy for a long time, so SmartPaks are an important part of her management program.
SmartFlex® II Support Pellets
Even though Sasha is young, I think it’s important to support healthy joint tissue right from the beginning. I decided to start her on SmartFlex II Support Pellets because it provides the fundamentals of joint health for horses in moderate work.
When her workload increases and she begins to jump higher and compete more often, I plan to bump up her joint support by switching her to SmartFlex III Resilience Pellets. I love that the SmartFlex line has a different formula for each type of workload—it makes it easy to choose the right joint supplement for Sasha as her needs change.
Things like changes in hay, training, and travel can stress a horse’s delicate digestive system. As a horse in training at a boarding barn, those types of stressors are unfortunately going to be part of Sasha’s life. Since SmartDigest Ultra was specially designed to help horses manage digestive stress, choosing it for Sasha was a no brainer. In addition to helping keep her hindgut healthy and balanced, feeding SmartDigest Ultra means that I was able to enroll her in ColiCare, SmartPak’s $7,500 colic surgery reimbursement program.
Since I got Sasha, she’s gone through changes in her turnout routine and her training schedule. Come spring, she’s also going to start traveling to horse shows. Since changes in routine and increased training and traveling can be stressful, I started her on SmartGut Pellets to support a healthy stomach. She doesn’t have a history of gastric upset, and I want to do everything I can to keep it that way!
