Since I was born and raised in the Northeast, sun protection is something that I’ve only ever thought about during the summer. After spending the last couple of months in Arizona and Southern California with SmartPak’s mobile store, I quickly learned that riders in the southern United States face the sun and the heat all year round. Luckily, there are now tons of clothing options that help riders battle both the heat and the sun when they are in the saddle, hanging out at horse shows, or on the trails. The best part about these shirts is that they double as awesome layering pieces during the colder months since they are long sleeve and designed to wick moisture. Whether you’re already riding in 90 degree temperatures, starting to gear up for the warmer months, or looking for an exceptionally functional new riding top, check out the four sun shirts that I don’t think any rider should live without!
1. SunShield Longsleeve Shirt by SmartPak
UPF Rating 50+, Blocks 98% of UV Rays
This one is at the top of my list for several reasons! The lightweight fabric keeps you cool and comfortable even in the warmest of temperatures. I’ve found the venting under the arms to encourage a generous amount of airflow and love that there are so many different colors to choose from so I can mix and match a bunch of different outfits. For those of you who aren’t worried about a t-shirt tan – this one is also available in short sleeves.
2. The Tailored Sportsman Ice Fil Shirt
50+ UV protection
The best feature of this shirt is the netted material that runs down the underside of your arm on the entire sleeve, promoting superior airflow. I find the fabric to be very flattering and just stretchy enough. I own this one in White with Blush but my favorite is the White with Seafoam because of out perfectly it matches our Piper Knee Patch Breeches in Taupe with Mint!
3. SmartPak Trifecta ¼ Zip Top
UPF Rating 50+
As if protection from the sun and cute styling weren’t enough, the Trifecta ¼ Zip Top also features InsectShield (the same stuff you find in a lot of fly sheets these days). That means that in addition to being shielded from the sun, you’ll also deter the pesky bugs while you’re out riding. It also has anti-microbial properties to fight the stink that is inevitable when you’re at the barn! This top is my favorite to wear when my horse and I decide to venture out on the trails.
4. Ariat Sunstopper Longsleeve ¼ Zip
Sun Protective Finish
The polka dots are what got me on this shirt, combined with the fact that I love to wear navy and white. The mesh that runs the length of the sleeve and behind the under arm promotes consistent airflow, too!

I’ve been wearing the Tailored Sportsman icefil sunblock shirts in humid and hot Midwest. Very skeptical at first but they really do work. If you’re in the barnyard you can even wet the shirt down for extra cooling effect–they dry quickly. Love the grape color! So far I have no complaints and the shirt is flattering. Runs fairly true to size.
