Spirulina is now for picky eaters, too!
The SmartPak Product Development team is always on the lookout for beneficial ingredients and better ways of delivering them to your horses, as well as our own. Spirulina (Arthrospria platensis) is a blue green algae valued for its nutritional value and its many documented health benefits. But the challenge with feeding spirulina to horses is that it’s not very palatable. So, although this exciting ingredient has been on our radar for quite some time, it wasn’t until we could get the palatability right that we finally launched new Spirulina Pellets by SmartPak!
Spirulina is a highly-nutritious plant-like organism that provides quality protein from many essential amino acids. This “super algae” also contains vitamins, minerals, the incredibly-beneficial fatty acids EPA and DHA, and numerous other phytonutrients, including flavanols, carotenoids, and C-phycocyanin. Research has shown that spirulina supports the immune system, and in addition to feeding spirulina for immune support, we recommend it for horses with respiratory conditions, seasonal allergies, itchy skin, and more.
Despite its taste challenges, we were determined to create a spirulina pellet that horses would love. After several rounds of formulation and palatability testing with our herd of taste test horses, we succeeded! Spirulina Pellets by SmartPak provide 15,000 mg of spirulina per 30 g serving, with an alfalfa meal base, a touch of stevia for sweetness, and apple-banana flavoring that provides a taste and aroma horses love. We’re thrilled to now offer our customers the incredible benefits of spirulina in a pellet that is officially Picky Eater Approved!
