At SmartPak, horse health is at the core of everything we do. That’s why we brought in Dr. Frank Andrews, LVMA, from Louisiana State University to talk with Dr. Lydia Gray, SmartPak Staff Veterinarian and Medical Director, about the research study he did for SmartPak on the safety of the ingredients turmeric and devil’s claw as it pertains to stomach health in horses. Listen to the two of them discuss how the study worked, what turmeric and devil’s claw are commonly used for, and most importantly, the results of the study!
Dr. Andrews has extensive experience in researching equine stomach health dating back to the original study of omeprazole (GastroGard) on horse’s stomachs, as well as the study he performed on SmartGut Ultra.
I am a practice Equine veterinarian and have read articles concerning Turmeric. One concern in Veterinary medicine is that the active ingredient “curcumin” can have an antibiotic potential. The article I read was warning that feeding Turmeric may cause a disruption of the natural bacterial flora in the hind gut. When I was researching chronic diarrhea in horses that article popped up. I dint know if Dr. Andrews has experienced diarrhea in the case study, or if he believes there is a valid concern with curcumin affecting the micro flora in the hindgut.
I put my mare on turmeric and her diarrhea stopped after having had it for two years.
My mare had diarrhea for 2 years. I put her on turmeric and it went away. ( I also put her on Smart Pak digest ultra)
