“I have a 26 year old TWH that has chronic diarrhea. He had vet work done last year, when it first started, with his blood work coming back normal, fecal exam okay and teeth are okay. No feed or hay change. Actually, his stool will be somewhat normal, not firm apples but has some substance to them, for most of the time then about once or twice a month it gets loose to the point of liquid…”
“I bought a mare approximately 2 1/2 months ago. She came from a bad situation, basically a rescue. She was not starved but thinner than she should be. She was being fed sweet feed (I believe they said 4 quarts a day). Since I’ve had her, I had her teeth done (they were terrible), dewormed her (ivermectin), I give her as much free-choice hay as possible (I have no grass) along with her grain…”
“My 6 year old mare has recently been diagnosed with an ulcer. They recommended 14 days of GastroGuard. I see that most of the studies have been done on 30 days of treatment. Do you usually treat for 14 days or longer in your practice? Also is there a supplement you recommend for horses with ulcers? Thank you. Regards, Laurie Bennison”
I have a 7 year old Haflinger mare – pleasure use – I’m concerned with being sure she’s receiving adequate nutrition requirements without over feeding. Currently she’s on a hay based diet with a gastric supplement and a joint supplement fed daily. She receives soaked alfalfa cubes daily in order to add supplements to her diet. She has a history of colic including surgery and a bout of colitis which landed her in the hospital for 10 days…
What would you recommend for grain/hay and/or probiotics for a 15 yr old mare that has tied up before, ulcered and just had colic surgery. Her intestines were impacted with Corn Cob bedding. She is not forming manure yet, still cow patty style, she will be home a week March 3rd. Thanks, Brenda
My gelding recently had a nephrosplenic entrapment. Treated successfully with rolling. What can be done to prevent this? Are there any early warning signs that I may have missed? How often does this recur? DG, Pennsylvania
